If you want to see what international sports stars are(n’t)
wearing when it comes to underwear, look no farther than the annual calendar Dieux du Stade (Gods of the Stadium).
The calendars and DVDs were first released in 2001, and
originally only featured French rugby players.
Successive years have branched out with other sports and other
nationalities.
The photos are primarily black-and-white nudes, with the
players in erotic poses. Originally
released in connection with various charity causes, the annual calendar has
been credited with increasing the popularity of rugby in France. Photographers have included Kris Gautier,
Mathias Vriens, François Rousseau, Carter Smith,
Fred Goudon, Mariano Vivanco, Steven Klein, Peter Lindbergh, and Tony Duran. Rousseau, who shot the 2004 edition, has also
been the photographer for editions since 2011.
There are bonuses, as well: if you happen to be in France,
pick up the Dieux du Stade skin care
product line that was released in 2006.
(It’s only available there.)
Rumor has it the annual “making of” DVD is also a big hit, so you may
want to budget for that as well. A
preview of the 2013 edition is available on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MG-F_dncv6Q.
I highly recommend
this calendar as a gift for friends, and they should be releasing the 2014
edition shortly. I hope Santa brings me
one! I’ve been so extra good this year.
